French novelist, poet and playwright (1828-1905), and writer of several highly successful fantasy and travel novels, later taken to film.

His book "De la Terre a la Lune",Ā  one of his most successful novels, signed by him on the first title page. Early edition, no year but from between 1872 and 1875, inscribed to Maria de las Mercedes Orleans (1860-1878, perished of Typhoid fever at age of only 18), who lived for a few years in Paris, later was the first wife of the Alfonso XII (1857-1885), King of Spain.

Inscription by another hand (not Verne) on the frontend page indicates this was Maria de las Mercedes Orleans“ book, given by her to someone called Ramon Cortes y Gutierrez.

A total of 169 numbered pages, some with illustrations, gilded edges, hardcovers, 7.25 x 10.75 inches, minor rust stains on pages, normal wear on covers, in overall very good condition. See scans.
