Autograph letter in German (sold with translation and transcription) signed by Wagner, dated May 19, 1859, addressed to the wife of the German composer August RoeckelĀ (1814-1876) with very interesting content.
1 sheet written on both sides, size is 5.4 x 8.6 inches, folds, blind-stamped by Hotel Schweizerhof (Lucerne), mailed on May 20, 1859, in excellent condition. Envelope included.
August Roeckel was a composer and conductor very active in Weimar, and a conspirator during the 1849 revolution. Roeckel met Wagner in Dresden where Wagner was a Music Director. After the 1849 uprising, Roeckel was captured and Wagner fled to Zurich. Roeckel was sentenced to death but his sentence was later commuted to solitary confinement for a couple of years.Ā
