Very rare picture book by Pasternak, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature, now best known for his novel Doctor Zhivago, and considered one of the greatest poets of the 20th century.Ā
Remarkably, Pasternak composed only 2 poems for children, "Zverinets" and "Karusel", inspired by the birth of his son in 1924. D. Mitrokhin, who created the illustrations, was one of the few members of the World of Art Group to remain in the USSR, and became one of the most important Soviet graphic artists. However, he illustrated relatively few childrenĀ“s books, and this maybe his masterpiece. There is a lightness of touch free of any Marxist propaganda that distinguishes it from most of the picture books of the New Economic Policy, while the influence of Matisse in the illustrations is evident.
