New York Symphony Orchestra - Diploma Signed by All Members 1922
Founded by Leopold Damrosch in 1878, the NY Symphony Orchestra was for many years the fiercest rival of the older Philharmonic Symphony Society of New York (or New York Philharmonic, founded in 1842). In 1920 it was the first American orchestra to tour Europe and ended merging with the NY Philharmonic in 1928.
Fabulous document signed by all the musicians, we counted 72 signatures in total, a diploma given to famous Russian pianist Alexander Siloti (1863-1945), recognizing his series of high-quality performances with the orchestra in New York and grating him a life membership honoris causa. The date of February 11th, 1922 is printed in small font text below the top paragraphs.
Siloti had settled in New York the previous year, gave concerts, and became an important teacher in Juilliard School of Music.Â
This is the original diploma given to Siloti and came from the estate of his daughter Kyriena Siloti (1895-1989), also an important piano teacher.
Size is 14 x 16.75 inches, professionally restored to fill gaps and repair cracks, in overall good condition. A truly unique item!
